The scene is a small community at night, above a ruined landscape. The world is irradiated and mostly barren after a nuclear war(yes, this came to me after playing Fallout 3, as is proved later). The community is raised above the dangerous ground on metal catwalks, the homes made of girders and aluminum siding, cobbled together as strongly as possible. Small lights glow hesitantly above the pathways, as few as can be spared safely.
A man bends before a large, round machine. He is my father. He turns a torque wrench to halt a certain cycle. I lean close to inspect the circular panel he works on, but the lights and discs that reveal numbers are meaningless to me. (think the face of a very large wristwatch)
My father sighs, and turns the wrench to restart the machine, and we walk down a side path to our home, a one room shed with a sturdy door. My slightly older brother joins us briefly before going out to scavenge
